Takeda Nobutora (武田 信虎) was the a diamyo of Kai province and the father of the famous Takeda Shingen.

Biography[]

Takeda Nobutora was a prominent samurai leader noted for his prolonged conflicts with neighboring domains, particularly with the landholding families of Shinano Province.[1] Reflecting the strategic nature of his political maneuvering, Nobutora arranged the marriage of his sister to Imagawa Yoshimoto, thereby securing an alliance with the Imagawa clan.[2]

In 1521, Takeda Nobutora defeated Imagawa Ujichika’s general, Fukushima Hydgo at the Battle of Iidagawara.[3]

In 1526, Takeda Nobutora achieved victory against Hōjō Ujitsuna in the Battle of Nashinokidaira.[4]

In 1531, Takeda Nobutora fought Suwa Yorishige at the Battle of Shickawa no gawara.[5]

In 1536, Takeda Nobutora attacked Hiraga Genshin at the Battle of Un no Kuchi with 8,000 troops. Nobutora was forced to retreat when there was a heavy snow fall, but during the small hours of morning his son Takeda Shingen, struck camp and marched his men back to Umi no Kuchi in secret. During this attack, Shingen took the castle. The incident showed how much more skilled Takeda Shingen was than his father Takeda Nobutora.[6]

Takeda Nobutora, openly disliked his son Takeda Shingen in spite of his victories and planned to disinherit Shingen in favor of his younger brother Takeda Nobushige.[7]

In July 7th 1541, Takeda Shingen deposed his father Takeda Nobutora and took total control of Kai province.[8]
