Matsudaira Hirotada (松平 広忠) is best known for being the father of Tokugawa Ieyasu and lord of Okazaki Castle.

Biography[]

Matsudaira Hirotada entered a tentative alliance with the Imagawa clan.[1]

He spent much of his military career in conflict with Oda Nobuhide. During an attack on Okazaki Castle, Hirotada sought assistance from Imagawa Yoshimoto, who agreed on the condition that the young Ieyasu Tokugawa be sent as a hostage. Hirotada consented, but Ieyasu was subsequently kidnapped by the Oda, complicating Hirotada’s ability to conduct further campaigns against the Oda clan.[2]

In 1549, Hirotada achieved a victory over Oda Nobuhide in battle but died shortly thereafter.[3]
